Free Courses and Retraining in Czechia in 2026: What the Labour Office Pays For
Free courses and retraining in Czechia in 2026 are not available only to unemployed people. The Czech Labour Office (Úřad práce ČR) can also support someone who already has a job but needs new qualifications, wants to change careers or is at risk of losing their current position.
Approval is not automatic. In 2026, the Labour Office is placing greater emphasis on whether the chosen training has a realistic connection to employment and whether the new skills are genuinely useful on the labour market.
For approved self-selected retraining, the Labour Office can pay up to 50,000 CZK over a three-year period. Registered job seekers may also qualify for financial support while attending retraining.
Which retraining courses can be fully paid for?
There are two main types of supported retraining. The first is retraining arranged directly by the Labour Office. The office selects the training provider and covers the approved cost of the course.
In justified cases, necessary related expenses may also be covered, such as travel costs or required protective equipment.
The second option is self-selected retraining. The applicant chooses the profession and training provider, while the Labour Office decides whether the course is suitable and likely to improve employment prospects. Current conditions are explained on the official Labour Office retraining page.
Up to 50,000 CZK for self-selected retraining
For approved self-selected retraining, the Labour Office may pay for one or several courses up to a combined limit of 50,000 CZK during three consecutive years, calculated from the start of the first approved course.
For example, if 30,000 CZK is used for the first course, up to 20,000 CZK remains available within the same three-year period.
The application must be approved before training begins. For applications submitted outside the online course database, the Labour Office requires the request at least 15 days before the course starts. Details are available on the official self-selected retraining page.
Can employed people receive funded retraining?
Yes. You do not necessarily have to be unemployed. A person who is already working may register with the Labour Office as someone interested in employment and apply for retraining that could help them change profession, improve their qualifications or avoid future unemployment.
The important difference concerns financial support during the course. This payment is intended for registered job seekers who meet the statutory conditions. Someone who remains employed and is registered only as an interested person does not receive this retraining allowance.
How much does an unemployed person receive during retraining?
Since 1 January 2026, eligible registered job seekers can receive retraining support equal to 80% of their previous average net monthly earnings or the relevant assessment base.
The maximum amount in 2026 is 38,537 CZK. The 80% support is also available for approved self-selected retraining starting in 2026, with payment calculated for the days when the person actually participates in the course.
The current rules are confirmed by the Czech Labour Office.
Which courses have a better chance of approval in 2026?
The Labour Office now focuses more strongly on training that leads to realistic employment. Priority is given to applicants whose position on the labour market is more difficult and to qualifications connected with sectors where employers need workers.
Supported areas may include social services, healthcare, technical and skilled trades, administration and practical digital skills used in specific professions.
The Labour Office considers previous qualifications, work experience, health circumstances and the applicant’s planned career path. Finding a course in the database therefore does not guarantee that the application will be approved.
Digital courses follow different funding rules
Digital education courses have a separate support scheme. According to the current Ministry information, an approved course may receive a contribution of up to 35,000 CZK, but the participant must pay 23.27% of the course price.
These courses are therefore not completely free. The Ministry of Labour course portal states that applications under the new digital training scheme are to open during the second half of 2026.
Czech language courses for foreigners have stricter conditions
Funding for Czech language retraining became more restrictive in 2026 because a substantial part of the available budget had already been used. Support now focuses mainly on language levels A2 and B1 and on people heading toward professions with long-term labour shortages.
Priority areas include healthcare, social services, education, construction and technical occupations. Normally only one Czech language retraining course per person is supported, although the same person may later apply separately for professional retraining.

The key point in 2026 is that approved professional retraining can be fully funded up to the 50,000 CZK three-year limit, but funding is never automatic. Apply before the course starts and clearly show how the qualification will help you find work, change profession or remain employed.
