Changing Employer with an Employee Card in the Czech Republic
Changing employer with an employee card in the Czech Republic is possible, but most holders cannot simply leave one job and immediately start another. The employee card (zaměstnanecká karta) is a residence permit connected to specific employment conditions.
In 2026, three deadlines are especially important: six months after receiving your first employee card, 90 days after your previous employment ends, and at least 30 days between notifying the Ministry of the Interior and the planned start of a new job.
The procedure depends mainly on whether you have free access to the Czech labour market. Without free access, you normally need confirmation from the Ministry of the Interior before starting with the new employer.
How to change employer with an employee card
If you do not have free access to the labour market, the change must be reported before you start the new job. You may begin only after you or the employer receive written confirmation that the legal conditions have been met.
You do not have to resign before submitting the notification. In practice, it is safer to find the new position, prepare the employment documents and report the change while your existing job is still active.
The current procedure is explained on the official Information Portal for Foreigners.
The six-month rule
When you hold your first employee card, you can normally start with another employer only after six months have passed since you physically received the card.
This restriction no longer applies once the employee card has been extended at least once. It also does not apply when only the job position changes with the same employer.
There are additional exceptions when employment ends for certain reasons recognised by Czech labour law, including specified organisational or health-related reasons and termination by the employer during the probationary period.
What happens after losing your job?
If you do not have free access to the labour market, you have 90 calendar days after your employment ends to report a new employer or apply for another eligible long-term residence purpose.
The notification must actually reach the Ministry of the Interior by the 90th day. Posting the documents on the final day is not enough.
If the deadline is missed, the employee card may expire. The official consequences are described on the employee card information page.
What kind of new job qualifies?
For an employee card without free access to the labour market, the new position generally needs to be registered in the Central Database of Vacancies available to employee card holders.
The employment relationship can be documented with a standard employment contract, a DPČ agreement or a preliminary agreement to conclude one of these contracts. A DPP agreement cannot be used for an employee card change.
The contract must provide at least 15 working hours per week, and the monthly wage or remuneration must be higher than the basic monthly minimum wage. Detailed requirements are available in the official proof of work relation guidance.
Documents needed for the change
You normally need:
- the official notification form;
- proof that the previous employment continues or the date when it ended;
- the new employment contract, DPČ or qualifying preliminary agreement;
- proof of professional qualifications when required for the position.
All mandatory documents should be submitted together. If essential evidence is missing, the notification may be treated as if it had not been submitted.
The notification can be delivered personally, by post, through a Czech Data Box, by email with a recognised electronic signature or through an authorised representative. There is no administrative fee for reporting the change.
When can you start the new job?
The Ministry must receive the notification at least 30 days before the intended starting date. The Ministry has up to 30 days to assess whether the conditions have been met.
Even if confirmation arrives earlier, you cannot start before the date written in the notification. If the Ministry concludes that the conditions were not met, the notification is treated as ineffective and may need to be submitted again.
If you have free access to the labour market
The rules are considerably simpler for employee card holders with free access to the labour market. They may start the new job without waiting for prior approval and must report the change to the Ministry within three working days.
Free access may result from citizenship, residence status, Czech education or certain professions. The current categories are listed on the official free-access guidance.
Common mistakes when changing employer
The biggest risks are starting work before the permitted date, missing the 90-day deadline, submitting incomplete documents or accepting a position that does not meet employee card requirements.
Special restrictions also apply to employment agencies. After leaving one agency, a standard employee-card notification cannot normally be used to move to another employment agency.
The safest approach is to arrange the new job before leaving the old one, submit a complete notification early and wait for the required confirmation. If your employment has already ended, the 90-day deadline becomes the most important date to protect your residence status.
