UK government announces multi-billion-pound investment in British shipbuilding

The UK government announced on 28 September 2026 that British shipyards will receive multi-billion-pound investment through three major maritime projects. The government says the projects are intended to support skilled jobs, strengthen the domestic industrial base and develop maritime capabilities.

The announcement covers two major areas: new floating docks for the Royal Navy’s submarine service and construction of a new marine research vessel in a British shipyard.

Three maritime projects

Three new floating docks for the Royal Navy’s submarine service will be built in Britain at HM Naval Base Clyde. The government says the project will support sovereign capabilities and the UK defence industrial base.

A new marine research vessel will also be built at a British shipyard. According to the government, the vessel is intended to support marine research, sustainable fishing and economic activity in coastal communities.

Focus on industrial capacity

The announcement was made by the UK government as part of its stated plans for a new phase of industrial development. The projects involve shipbuilding, maritime research and infrastructure connected with the Royal Navy.

The government says the investment is expected to support high-skilled employment and contribute to growth in different parts of the UK. The announcement itself describes the projects as part of a wider effort to strengthen Britain’s industrial and national security capabilities.
