Train to the Czech Republic in 2026: Tickets, Connections and EU Passenger Rights

Travelling by train to the Czech Republic is a practical alternative to flying, especially when starting the journey in another European country. Cross-border trains offer city-centre arrivals and a range of advance and flexible fares.

Before booking, check whether your itinerary uses one through-ticket or several separate tickets. This can affect your rights if a delayed train causes you to miss a connection.

For international travel, also check seat reservations, luggage rules and whether your train connects with local transport at the arrival station.

Train to the Czech Republic: choosing a ticket

Operators offer different ticket types. České dráhy explains the difference between flexible and train-specific tickets; some fares are valid on a particular service, while others allow more flexibility.

Read the restrictions on refunds, changes and seat reservations before buying the cheapest option.

Why a through-ticket matters

According to official EU rail-passenger guidance, rights after missing a connection are stronger when the journey is covered by a through-ticket. Separate tickets may be treated as separate transport contracts.

What happens when a train is delayed

If a qualifying rail service is expected to reach its final destination more than 60 minutes late, passengers generally have a choice of ticket reimbursement or re-routing under comparable conditions. Some services have exemptions and special circumstances can affect compensation.

Can you claim delay compensation?

On eligible journeys, the EU rules normally provide compensation of 25% of the fare for arrival delays of one to two hours and 50% for delays of two hours or more. The rules have exceptions, including some extraordinary circumstances; keep your ticket and delay confirmation.

Do you need a seat reservation

A reservation is mandatory on some trains and optional on others. The carrier’s sales system should indicate this. When travelling with children, luggage or on busy routes, choosing a reserved seat can make the journey more predictable.

How to continue travelling from Prague

Prague’s main station connects to the metro and local transport. Some nearby suburban trains belong to the integrated PID fare system, but international and long-distance tickets do not automatically include unlimited Prague travel. Check each fare separately.
