New method could make some quantum computer operations more than 1,000 times faster

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed a method that could make certain complex quantum computing operations more than 1,000 times faster. The advance could help researchers build quantum systems that are both faster and more reliable.

One of the biggest challenges in quantum computing is the extreme sensitivity of quantum information to disturbances from the surrounding environment. The longer an operation takes, the more time there is for errors to appear and information to be lost.

Thousands of cycles could be replaced by one

Some existing approaches require thousands of repeated cycles to create and control particular quantum states. The new method can perform a broad range of these operations in a single cycle, dramatically reducing the time required.

According to Chalmers University of Technology, the approach is designed for bosonic quantum codes and could be implemented using existing superconducting quantum circuit platforms.

The work is currently theoretical rather than a finished commercial technology. An important next step will be demonstrating the method experimentally. The research was published in Physical Review Letters.
