Japan Wins First Gold at the 2026 Asian Games as China’s Yu Zidi Sets Swimming Record

Japan claimed the first gold medal of the 2026 Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games on September 20, winning the men’s individual triathlon. China also made an early impact in the swimming pool, where teenage swimmer Yu Zidi won the women’s 200-metre butterfly with a Games record.

The opening competitions brought medals across several sports as Japan hosted the Asian Games for the first time since Hiroshima in 1994.

Japan takes the first gold medal

Japan’s opening gold came in the men’s individual triathlon, which combines swimming, cycling and running. The result gave the host nation the first victory of the Games’ medal programme.

As Reuters reported on September 20, China quickly built a double-digit gold-medal total across the opening events.

Yu Zidi breaks the Asian Games record

One of the notable results came in the women’s 200-metre butterfly. China’s Yu Zidi won the final and set a new Asian Games record in the event.

Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle also successfully defended his title in the men’s 100-metre freestyle. Meanwhile, Thailand secured victories in teqball, a sport making its Asian Games debut.

The Games continue in Aichi and Nagoya

The early results represent only the beginning of the multi-sport competition. Medal standings will continue to change as more swimming, athletics and team-sport events take place.

For the host nation, the opening triathlon victory provided an immediate gold medal, while China’s results in the pool marked a strong start to its swimming programme.
