EU industrial production fell again in August 2026: euro area output down 0.5%
Industrial production fell by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.3% across the EU in August 2026 compared with July. The latest data show that European industry remained under pressure after declines in the previous month.
Compared with August 2025, output was 1.1% lower in the euro area and 0.2% lower in the EU.
The picture differs by sector: capital goods and durable consumer goods increased month on month, while intermediate goods and energy declined.
EU industrial production in August 2026
According to Eurostat, euro area production fell 0.5% from July while EU production decreased 0.3%.
July had already recorded monthly declines of 0.3% in the euro area and 0.4% in the EU.
Which sectors fell
In the euro area, intermediate-goods production decreased by 0.8% and energy by 0.6% compared with July.
Capital goods increased by 0.4%, while durable consumer goods rose by 0.2%.
Why the data matter for jobs
Industrial output is closely watched because manufacturing supports large employment networks in factories, logistics, engineering and supplier companies across Europe.
A short monthly decline does not automatically mean mass layoffs, but a prolonged downturn can affect hiring, overtime and investment plans.
What to watch next
The next Eurostat industrial-production release is scheduled for November. The key question will be whether the summer decline continues into autumn.
For Central European economies with large manufacturing sectors, the trend is especially relevant to automotive, machinery and supplier employment.
