Carnegie Mellon receives $3 billion gift and plans new Miami campus

Carnegie Mellon University announced on September 30, 2026 that Citadel founder and CEO Ken Griffin is providing a $3 billion gift to the university. The funding will support Carnegie Mellon’s existing Pittsburgh campus and the planned launch of a new university campus in Miami.

According to Carnegie Mellon, $1 billion will go to its Pittsburgh operations, while another $2 billion will support the creation of Carnegie Mellon University Miami.

New Carnegie Mellon campus planned in Miami

The planned campus will occupy a 35-acre site in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The university aims to begin enrolling students there in 2028.

Carnegie Mellon says the Miami campus will organize education and research around major societal challenges rather than traditional academic majors. Initial areas are expected to include human health and biological discovery, national security, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.

$500 million for computer science

Of the $1 billion allocated to Pittsburgh, $500 million will provide flexible support for university priorities and another $500 million will go to Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science.

The university says the $3 billion contribution is the largest individual gift in the history of higher education. Plans for the Miami campus remain subject to required approvals.
