airBaltic Enters Court-Supervised Restructuring: What Passengers Need to Know

Latvian airline airBaltic has entered a court-supervised financial restructuring process, raising an obvious question for passengers with existing bookings: are their flights and tickets still valid?

For now, the airline says yes. Flights and customer services are continuing as normal, tickets remain valid and passengers do not need to take any action because of the restructuring.

airBaltic receives initial court approval

A U.S. bankruptcy judge has granted initial approval for airBaltic to proceed under Chapter 11 protection. According to Reuters, the carrier can initially access €140 million from a €350 million debtor-in-possession financing package.

The financing is intended to keep the airline operating while it restructures its finances, including paying employees and maintaining normal business activities.

Existing airBaltic tickets remain valid

The most important point for travellers is that Chapter 11 does not mean airBaltic has stopped flying. An airBaltic passenger notice states that flights and customer services continue as normal.

  • existing tickets remain valid;
  • passengers do not need to rebook because of the restructuring;
  • new flights can still be booked;
  • normal customer services remain available.

The airline plans a smaller operation

The restructuring is designed to reduce airBaltic's debt and put the airline on a more sustainable financial footing. The current plan includes returning 20 surplus aircraft and renegotiating aircraft leases.

airBaltic is aiming to complete the restructuring by June 2027. That means the size of its future network and fleet may change, but passengers should rely on their individual booking status rather than assuming that a financial restructuring automatically means their flight has been cancelled.
